The Path Matters

The thing we all need to understand is that everything we do in the field changes how the fiber gets placed. Every bore, every coupler, every dip, every bend, it all matters. Every choice out here shapes what happens when someone eventually goes to pull or blow that fiber.

We have to think like the crew that will be getting the fiber into our conduit. When you’re putting duct in the ground and making decisions about how to make a running line work, ask yourself, how’s that fiber going to get through here? It’s about how that path will handle when the crew pulling/blowing a cable through it weeks or months later.

If a duct has a tight bend, a low spot full of water, or a crushed coupler, the fiber is going to find it. And when the fiber feels it, the next crew will too, through higher tension, dropped pressure, and wasted time trying to figure out where it’s hanging up.

Most of the time, it’s not the big mistakes that ruin a pull. It’s the small ones. A bore that dropped just a few inches too low, a trench that settled overnight, or a spot where the compactor ran a little too close. Those things don’t look like much in the moment, but when the air and cable start moving, they are the reason a job falls apart.

That’s why the best crews take a few minutes before they leave the site. They walk the line, check their bends, make sure everything’s clear, and leave it ready. If everyone started thinking one step ahead, thinking like the fiber crew, the work would go smoother for everyone.

The Setup Before the Pull

You can tell how a pull is going to go just by looking at the setup. When everything’s lined out right, the job runs smooth from start to finish. A good setup makes the pull easy. A bad one turns the job into a fight.

Before you touch the fiber, take a minute to think through the setup. The first thing to figure out is direction. Don’t just pull from whatever end is closest. Look at the grade. Pulling uphill is harder on the blower, the fiber, and the crew. If you can pull downhill, do it. It’s easier, cleaner, and safer for the cable. If you have to pull uphill, at least know what you’re up against so you can plan for it instead of being surprised halfway through.

Next, check how the reel is lined up. The fiber should feed straight into the duct, not from an angle or around a bend. That small “S” curve that looks harmless adds more drag than you’d think. A reel sitting too far back or turned sideways starts chewing the jacket before the fiber even gets inside the duct. That’s how tension builds up before the real work even begins.

Before you start blowing, walk the whole route. Make sure the duct ends are capped, clean, and ready. Wipe them out if they’re dirty. Make sure you’ve got the right reel for the run. Don’t assume. Check your air pressure, check your lube, and check your fittings. Every run has a limit. Knowing that limit keeps you from wasting time and fighting pressure you’ll never beat.

Most of the problems out here come from rushing the setup. Crews skip small steps, don’t check their angles, don’t test their pressure, and then spend the rest of the day fixing what five minutes of attention could’ve caught.

The guys who’ve been around a while take the extra time up front, because they’ve already learned the hard way. They know that if the start is wrong, everything after it will be too.

Communication Between Crews

One crew lays the duct, another pulls the fiber, and another comes behind to splice. If the first crew doesn’t pass along what really happened, the next one is left guessing. And guessing on a job costs time, money, and trust.

You’ve seen how it goes. The bore crew hits rock, shifts the line a few feet, and keeps going. No marks, no notes, no heads-up. A week later, the fiber crew shows up, hooks up the blower, can’t get air through, and spends half the day figuring out why.

Good crews don’t do that. They talk. They take a few minutes before leaving to mark what changed. They tag their couplers, cap their ducts, and make notes that actually help the next crew. Things like bore shot direction, where the duct kicks over, where it’s shallow, where there’s a low spot, simple stuff that saves hours later.

And it works both ways. When the fiber crew finds a crushed duct, water in a line, or a coupler that wasn’t placed right, they don’t just work around it. They record it, report it, and pass it up. It’s not about making sure the next job doesn’t have to fight the same problem again.

You can tell who runs a solid operation just by how clean the handoffs are. Crews that communicate make jobs flow. Crews that don’t spend half their time chasing the last crew’s mistakes.

Environmental Factors

Weather changes everything. Hot, cold, wet, or dry, it all affects how fiber moves. The guys who’ve been doing this for awhile plan for the conditions they’re working in that day.

When it’s hot, the reel heats up, the jacket softens, and the lube dries faster than you expect. If you leave the reel baking in the sun or skip re-lubing, that fiber will start to drag. The pressure climbs, the pull gets sticky.

Cold weather brings a different kind of trouble. The cable stiffens, the air gets heavier, and every bend feels tighter. Pulling cold fiber is like pushing a frozen rope. That’s why crews let the reel warm up before they start. The ground might be ready, but the fiber isn’t until it’s loosened up a bit.

Moisture is another problem that sneaks up on you. When duct ends aren’t capped, dew, dirt, or bugs find their way inside. It’s always something small, a bit of mud at the coupler or a wasp nest in the line. That’s why good crews check both ends before they start. They wipe them clean, make sure they’re clear, and then hook up.

Wind and dust cause problems too. A little grit in the duct can scratch the jacket the whole way through. The fix is simple. Keep the duct capped until you’re ready to use it.

Every kind of weather changes how the fiber behaves. You can’t control the weather, but you can plan for it. The crews that think ahead stay out of trouble. The ones that don’t end up fighting it all day.

Reel and Route Management

Reel work looks simple, but it’s where most crews lose time. How you plan your reels and your route decides how the pull goes..

A reel is part of a plan. Every run has a limit, how far you can go before friction or pressure catches up with you. The best crews already know those numbers before the job starts. That’s how they stay ahead instead of reacting mid-run.

Reel sequence matters too. Every reel has a purpose and a place. Mixing up runs, counts, or routes creates confusion that spreads fast. The smart move is to plan reel order on paper first, not in the field. When each reel is labeled, logged, and matched to the right segment, the pull stays clean. When it’s not, someone’s cutting, splicing, and wasting time trying to fix it later.

Slack and landing points need to be thought through as well. Knowing where you’ll coil, where the fiber will rest, and how much you’ll leave at cabinets or handholes saves you time. The crews that skip that step always end up short somewhere, and once the fiber’s in, it’s too late to fix it.

You can also tell how experienced a crew is by how they handle assist points. Rookie crews push a single long run and hope for the best. The good crews split it up and use mid-assists before pressure becomes a problem. They know that good planning keeps tension low and control high.

The same goes for how the route itself is handled. Every turn, handhole, and elevation change affects how the fiber moves. Good crews plan for it before the reel ever spins. They think about slope, turns, and pull direction.

Reel and route management is about staying two steps ahead. The best jobs happen because someone thought it through first.

Crew Readiness

A pull only looks easy when everyone knows what they’re doing. It’s never a one-man show. Every person on that crew has a job to do, and if one of them zones out or starts guessing, things go wrong fast.

Before the reel turns, the lead should make sure the plan is clear. Who’s feeding the fiber? Who’s watching tension? Who’s running the blower? Who’s calling the stop? When everyone knows their part, the job feels steady and controlled and that’s what a clean pull really looks like.

Communication is what keeps a pull alive. Crews that don’t talk much make mistakes. Crews that stay in sync stay safe and efficient. You don’t need radios or fancy signals. A hand up means stop. A wave means slow. A thumbs-up means go. Keep it simple and keep it steady.

Safety matters too. That blower can move a cable fast enough to hurt someone. If the line jumps or the duct pops, everyone needs to be standing where they should, not crowding the setup. A ready crew looks calm. Nobody’s yelling. Nobody’s rushing. Everyone’s paying attention.

Learning from Each Pull

Every pull teaches you something if you’re paying attention. It will show you how good your setup was, where you rushed, or where something underground wasn’t right. You just have to listen and watch.

When a pull goes smooth, that means the prep was solid and the duct was clean, the path was straight, and the crew was working together. And when a pull fights you, that’s not bad luck either. There’s a reason. Maybe a coupler was off-center. Maybe the reel sat too far back. Maybe there was a low spot full of water. There’s always something you can point to if you take the time to look for it.

You can’t fix what you don’t track. Every pull adds to your playbook, even the rough ones. Especially the rough ones. The best guys don’t hide mistakes. They figure out why they happened so they don’t happen again. That’s how you build skill that lasts.

After you’ve done this a while, you start to notice the small things. The sound of the blower when the tension starts climbing. The feel of the air at the duct when it’s flowing right. The look of the reel when it’s feeding clean. That’s the stuff you can’t teach in a classroom. You learn it by doing the work and paying attention.

Fiber work is simple, not easy. You can’t muscle your way through it. You’ve got to think, watch, and learn. The crews that last don’t just work hard, they learn hard. Every pull teaches them a little more control, a little more patience, and a lot fewer surprises.
