Keep the Pathway Clean

When you put duct in the ground, you might think the job is finished once it’s buried and backfilled. Looks clean on the surface. Dirt’s packed in. Sod or asphalt is patched. Everyone’s ready to move on. I’ve learned the hard way: the only part of that job that really matters is inside the duct. That’s the pathway.

The Pathway Is the Network

The duct is more than just plastic pipe. It’s the highway that the fiber has to travel. If the highway is blocked, crooked, or full of trash, nothing moves. Fiber cable doesn’t drive itself around obstacles. It doesn’t bend itself back into shape. It’s only as good as the path you give it.

I’ve been on jobs where everything looked perfect topside. Then the fiber crew showed up to pull, and they couldn’t even get 50 feet in. Why? Because the pathway was packed with mud. That’s when everyone realizes the surface doesn’t tell the whole story.

What Happens When the Pathway Isn’t Clean

Think about what can get in there:

  • Mud caked like cement from a bore.

  • Rocks and gravel that scrape the jacket.

  • Coupler lips sticking out, catching everything that moves.

  • Pinches and kinks from sloppy backfill.

  • Water sitting in low spots, turning to silt.

Every one of those things makes it harder, sometimes impossible, to pull or blow fiber. I’ve seen crews burn through reels because a single rock shredded the cable inside the duct. I’ve seen ducts so packed with mud we had to vacuum them like sewer lines before fiber could even be attempted.

Inside the Duct Still Isn’t Safe

A lot of guys think, “Well, the fiber’s in. It’s safe.” I used to think the same. But here’s the thing:

  • Duct doesn’t protect from friction. If the path isn’t smooth, the jacket rubs, heat builds, and fiber burns.

  • Duct doesn’t fix shape. Once it’s oval or kinked, it stays that way.

  • Duct doesn’t block water. Water sits, freezes, and carries dirt.

So no, just being inside duct doesn’t mean the fiber is safe. The duct has to be clean and clear for it to do its job.

Why Clean Matters So Much

On the surface, cleaning the duct sounds like busy work. But, how clean that pathway is decides everything that comes after. You can do the best bore in the world, you can set every handhole right, but if the inside of that duct isn’t clean, the fiber won’t make it.

Fiber Is Tough and Fragile at the Same Time

Fiber cable is strong when you pull it straight, but fragile when it rubs or bends. Inside that duct, every bit of dirt, rock, or crooked joint turns into a point of stress. When the pathway isn’t clean, pulling fiber is like dragging a rope through sandpaper. Friction builds fast. Friction makes heat. Heat weakens the jacket. I’ve seen cables literally burn from the inside because tension and friction got out of hand.

With blown fiber, friction works different but hurts just the same. The air pressure pushes the cable forward, but the moment it hits grit, a coupler lip, or a pinch, the cable bunches up. It doesn’t glide, it stalls. And once it stalls, you’re not fixing it without cutting in.

Here’s what happens in real life when the duct isn’t clean:

  1. Fiber crew sets up to pull or blow.

  2. Cable hits resistance halfway in.

  3. Crew tries harder, more lube, more push, more pressure.

  4. Cable binds, burns, or snaps.

  5. Whole run is wasted.

That one little bit of dirt or that one coupler lip doesn’t just slow things down. It wrecks the whole job.

It’s not just about today’s pull. That duct is going to get used again in five, ten, twenty years. If it’s clean and smooth, you can add another cable, replace old cable, or upgrade the network without tearing up the street. If it’s full of mud and silt, or couplers are sloppy, that pathway is dead the first time you try to reuse it.

I’ve walked onto jobs where the duct was only three years old and already useless. By then, nobody wants to pay to dig it up again. The ISP is stuck with bad infrastructure.

What Gets in the Way

A duct doesn’t stay perfect just because you put it in the ground. Once it’s buried, anything that sneaks inside or goes wrong with the shape becomes a problem for the fiber. Let’s walk through the real obstacles:

Mud and Slurry

When you drill, you’re pushing mud to hold the hole open. That mud loves to sneak into the duct. Once it’s inside, it doesn’t “dry out and disappear” like guys think. It cakes up like cement. I’ve pulled duct that rattled with dried slurry chunks. Fiber hits that, and it stops cold. You end up vacuuming or rodding it for hours.

Rocks and Gravel

Even pea gravel is a killer. Think about it: the fiber jacket is thin. One rock with a sharp edge will scrape it as the cable moves. I’ve seen brand new reels ruined before they were even tested, jacket scored, fibers broken.

Coupler Lips

This one gets overlooked the most. A coupler isn’t lined up right. That tiny lip becomes a speed bump for mandrels, pull ropes, and fiber. On a pull, it chews the jacket. On a blow, it stops the cable dead. You can’t see it from the outside, but inside it’s like trying to shove a rope past a nail sticking into the pipe.

Kinks and Pinches

When you dump dirt on top and let the bucket shove it down, the duct doesn’t stay round, it goes oval. That little pinch becomes a choke point. Pull rope hangs, mandrels stick, fiber grinds. Sometimes it’s not even backfill, it’s a bend forced too tight.

Water and Silt

Water gets in through open ends or low spots. Over time, that water carries dirt, which settles in the duct. It turns into silt, thick, heavy, like wet clay. Now you’re not just pushing fiber through pipe, you’re shoving it through mud. Add freezing weather and it gets worse. I’ve seen ducts freeze solid, splitting when crews tried to push.

Tight Bends

Sometimes duct gets forced around corners too sharp for fiber to handle. You can shove pipe through it and think you’re done, but the bend is waiting like a trap. Fiber won’t bend that tight. It binds, burns, or breaks. You don’t find out until you’re mid-pull.

The Layer Beneath It All

Every one of these problems comes down to the same truth: fiber doesn’t forgive.

  • Copper will bend. Fiber won’t.

  • Copper can scrape. Fiber breaks.

  • Copper will take some water. Fiber dies in it.

That’s why the pathway has to be more than good enough. It has to be clean, straight, and proven.

Why Fiber Isn’t Protected Just Because It’s in Duct

We tend to believe if the duct is in then its safe. I thought that way too when I was younger. You put the fiber inside plastic and figure the hard part’s over.

Duct Doesn’t Stop Friction

Fiber moving through duct is always rubbing the inside wall. If the duct is smooth and clean, no problem. But throw in dirt, mud, or a coupler lip, and that rubbing turns into drag. Drag turns into heat. Heat burns the jacket.

Duct Doesn’t Fix Shape

If a duct is crushed or oval, it stays that way. Plastic doesn’t bounce back once the ground sits on it. A mandrel won’t pass, but if nobody checks, the fiber still gets shoved in. That pinch point adds tension.

Duct Doesn’t Block Water

Ends left open? Water gets in. Low spots? Water sits. And water doesn’t come alone, it brings dirt and silt. Over time, it makes sludge that fills the pathway. Fiber shoved through sludge doesn’t glide, it grinds. Even “water-tight” jackets don’t stop friction and grit from scarring the outside. And if that water freezes, now the duct itself can split.

Duct Doesn’t Like Tight Bends

Just because you can bend duct around a corner doesn’t mean fiber can follow. A reel of pipe will flex around almost anything. Fiber cable won’t. It kinks, it locks, it burns. The duct doesn’t care. It’s just a hollow tube.

How to Do It Step by Step

Proofing a duct isn’t complicated. It’s not fancy. It doesn’t take hours. But it does take doing it right, every single time. I’ve learned this the hard way, skip one part and it’ll be the exact part that burns you later. Here’s the way I teach it:

1. Have the Tools on Hand

This is where most crews lose the fight before they even start. You can’t proof without the right gear. You need:

  • A good rodder – stiff enough to push through long runs.

  • A proper mandrel – sized right for the duct, not something you “make do” with.

  • A brush – wire or poly, sized to sweep the inside clean.

  • An air source – to blow out fine dirt or water.

If that stuff isn’t on the truck, proofing won’t happen.

2. Rod the Duct

First pass is simple, shove the rod through end to end. That tells you right away if you’ve got a clear path. If it hangs up, stop and find out why. Don’t muscle it. Don’t say, “It’ll be fine.” If the rod won’t go, the fiber sure won’t.

3. Mandrel the Duct

This is the real test. The mandrel doesn’t lie. If it passes, you know the duct isn’t pinched or out of round. If it won’t pass, you’ve got a problem that has to be fixed now.

Don’t cheat the mandrel size. I’ve seen guys use one that’s too small just to say it passed.

4. Brush the Duct

Once the mandrel makes it through, send the brush. This pulls out dirt, mud, and rocks that the mandrel alone won’t catch. A few passes and you’ll see what was really sitting in that pathway. Better to clean it now than let the fiber crew grind against it later.

5. Blow It Out

Air is the finisher. Hook up a compressor or blower and push air through end to end. That clears fine dust, water droplets, and leftover grit. If you see junk flying out the far end, you know you just saved yourself a call-back.

Pro tip: always stand clear of the far end. I’ve seen mud, water, and even frogs shoot out of duct when it finally clears.

6. Seal and Mark It

Once it’s clean and proven, don’t leave it open for the next rainstorm to undo your work. Cap it. Tape it. Seal it however your crew does it. Then mark it as “proofed.”

What I Tell Every Crew

When I’m standing in front of a crew before the day starts, I don’t dress it up. I don’t preach. I just tell them the truth I’ve seen over and over. Here’s what I drive into their heads:

If You Put It In, You Proof It

No exceptions. Doesn’t matter if the bore felt smooth or the trench looked perfect. If you put duct in the ground, you’re responsible for making sure the pathway is clear. Not the fiber crew. Not the inspector. You.

Don’t Hand Your Headache to the Next Guy

Skipping proofing is just passing the pain down the line. The fiber crew shows up weeks later and finds out the duct’s blocked, crushed, or packed with mud. They blame the crew that buried it. And they’re right.

Don’t Assume Smooth Means Good

This is the lie that burns crews the most. Just because a bore pulled easy doesn’t mean the duct is clean inside. I’ve seen smooth bores end up packed with slurry or pinched under backfill. Proofing is the only way to know.

Proofing Isn’t Extra

A lot of guys treat proofing like an extra step. It’s not. Proofing is part of the install. If you skip it, you didn’t finish. It’s the same as walking away from a splice without testing it. Nobody would call that done. Why should duct be any different?

Treat Duct Good

Duct isn’t pipe you throw in the ground and forget. It’s the only piece of the network that doesn’t get swapped or upgraded later. Once it’s in, it’s in for life. Treat it like gold. Protect it. Proof it. Seal it.
