The Internet Is Just a Giant Mail System

Following a message from the moment you press send to the moment it arrives.

One of the simplest ways I have found to explain the internet to construction crews is to stop talking about technology and start talking about a letter.

People know how to send a letter. Very few people can explain everything that happens between the mailbox and the destination.

The letter does not magically appear at the recipient's house. It enters a system that was designed to move information from one location to another. The first thing that system needs is an address. Without an address, the postal service has no idea where the letter belongs. The address is what allows the entire journey to begin.

The internet works the same way. Every text message, email, video stream, website request, and online game starts with information that needs to reach a specific destination. Before the information can move, the network must know where it is going. Every piece receives addressing information that allows the network to identify both the sender and the recipient. Without that information, the message has nowhere to go.

Once a letter enters the postal system, it does not travel directly to the destination. It first arrives at a local facility where it is sorted with thousands of other letters. Machines read addresses, determine destinations, and group mail according to where it needs to travel next. The larger the city, the more sorting takes place. The larger the volume of mail, the more important those sorting facilities become.

The internet the same, except on a much larger scale. Every second, billions of pieces of information are moving through the network. Videos are being streamed. Websites are loading. Emails are being sent. Online meetings are taking place. Rather than handling a few thousand letters, the internet is managing billions of digital messages at the same time. To keep everything organized, information passes through equipment whose job is very similar to a postal sorting center. These devices examine destination information and determine the next best place to send the data.

This raises another interesting question. How does the system decide which path to use?

If a letter is traveling from Oklahoma to Florida, there are dozens of possible routes it could take. The postal service does not choose roads at random. It chooses routes based on efficiency, available transportation, traffic volume, and the ability to reach the destination. A truck breakdown, weather event, or facility issue may cause the route to change. The goal is not to follow one fixed path. The goal is to successfully deliver the letter.

The internet operates the same way. Information does not always travel along the exact same route. If one path becomes congested, unavailable, or inefficient, the network can often choose another route. This ability to constantly adapt is one reason the internet remains reliable even while handling an enormous amount of traffic every day.

Another thing many people find surprising is that a message does not travel through the network as one complete piece. Imagine trying to mail an entire encyclopedia in a single envelope. It would be heavy, difficult to transport, and inefficient to process. The postal service would rather move many smaller envelopes than one giant package.

The internet takes a similar approach. Large messages are broken into many smaller pieces before they begin their journey. A photo may become hundreds of pieces. A movie may become millions. Each piece travels independently through the network. Some may take slightly different routes. Some may arrive sooner than others. Once they reach their destination, the receiving device places everything back into the correct order.

That process happens so quickly that users never realize it occurred.

When someone opens a webpage, they do not see thousands of pieces arriving and being assembled. They simply see the page load. When someone watches a movie, they do not see millions of separate deliveries taking place. They simply see the video play.

The remarkable part is not that information moves. Humans have been moving information for thousands of years. The remarkable part is the scale. Every day the internet performs the equivalent of delivering billions upon billions of letters, each carrying a small piece of information and each requiring the correct destination, the correct route, and the correct delivery order.

Viewed from that perspective, the internet stops looking like a mysterious technology and starts looking like something much more familiar. It is simply one of the largest transportation systems ever built. Instead of moving paper envelopes, it moves information. Instead of using streets and highways, it uses networks and fiber. Instead of taking days to complete a delivery, it often completes the trip in fractions of a second.

At its core, however, the challenge remains exactly the same as it was when someone first dropped a letter into a mailbox. Get the message to the right place.
